Dr. LaMasters is passionate about high quality outcomes and continuous quality improvement.
Dr. LaMasters received her medical degree from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine in 2001. She completed her residency in General Surgery at the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita in 2006. She then went on to complete advanced training with a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery with an emphasis in Bariatric and Robotic Surgery in 2007 at Stanford University in California. She was one of the first surgeons to earn recognition from the American Board of surgery as a specialist in Metabolic Bariatric Surgery with a focused practice designation (DABS-FPMBS). She has additional expertise in medical management of obesity since 2011, completed her Board Certification in Obesity Medicine, and obtained her DABOM in 2019.
She has led a very busy, successful practice with high quality outcomes and has performed over 4000 bariatric surgeries in the past 18 years. She was the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at UnityPoint Clinic Weight Loss Specialists in West Des Moines, Iowa and Iowa Methodist Medical Center an MBSAQIP Comprehensive Accredited Center for 17 years. She is also a Clinical Adjunct Faculty Associate Professor at the University of Iowa teaching residents for surgery, internal medicine, family medicine, and medical students.
With a strong focus on a team-based approach, Dr. LaMasters is dedicated to each patient’s success. Dr. LaMasters is not only a world renowned Bariatric Surgeon, but she is also a recognized and sought after invited expert speaker for surgical and medical treatment of the disease of obesity both in the USA and Internationally.
Dr. LaMasters currently serves as Senior Past President 2022-2023 for American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). This is the premier organization for bariatric surgery in the world. She is a Past President of the Iowa State Chapter of the ASMBS. She also serves as an Associate Editor for the journal Surgery of Obesity and Related Disease (SOARD) the official journal of ASMBS.
She serves as co-chair for the Standards and Verification committee, Vice Chair of CMBS, and on the Adjudication committee for the MBSAQIP with the American College of Surgeons. She also serves as a site surveyor and coach for other surgeons and programs across the country in quality improvement.
